US Threat to Canada
When your closest allies assess you are their greatest threat - it's time to think about what you have become
Washington DC 18 AUG 2023
Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly says Canada has been considering a “game plan” for how it would respond if the United States takes a far-right, authoritarian shift after next year’s presidential elections.
Just days ago NZ Intelligence released a report on the ongoing threat to NZ from Maga. They placed their warning about Trumpism on a par with Chinese and Iranian political warfare operations.
Now the Canadian government is publicly discussing the threat to their country from America if Maga completes the ongoing coup or Trump is reelected.
When your closest allies assess the rise of fascism in your country to be as dangerous to their national security as ongoing operations by Chinese and Iranian spies, maybe it's time to rethink what you have become.
Both NZ and Canada are in the Five Eyes Intelligence alliance.
Canada is joint commander of NORAD and America's largest trading partner. It has a long, permeable, border with the US, and has few defenses against Maga political, economic and disinformation operations. Should those activities be once again conducted by the government of the most powerful country on earth, Canadian democracy could be facing an existential crisis.
If an increasingly authoritarian U.S. is increasingly unilateral and dismissive of traditional alliances like NATO or arrangements like Norad, how does that damage our security?” Prof. Juneau asked. He said another question would be around American intervention in Canadian democratic processes.
As canaries in the national security mine go, few could be more striking than Canada fearing a return to a Trump America.
Consider the risk they are taking publicly acknowledging the threat.
A whole spectrum of problems confront our northern neighbors and that's assuming things stay peaceful. If large scale civil protest takes place in the US (for a kaleidescope of reasons), Trump will no longer have advisers to prevent initiation of the Insurrection Act. He ordered it's use multiple times in the past telling advisers to shoot protestors. Does Canada close it's borders? If it sides with democracy that will inflame Trump. Canada will be caught in a series of unenviable dilemmas from the tactical to strategic.
Beyond those considerations, Trump's implusiveness and pleasure in creating chaos could see him initiating a trade war with Canada and/or Mexico (for not paying for the wall or whatever idiocy of the moment).
It could even get worse. This is a mentality that thought we could shoot missiles into Mexico and “pretend we didn't do it”.
Trump on his RETRIBUTION tour will accept no limits on his outrageous and illegal orders. He is so ridiculous that it's hard to narrow down the orders he might issue against old allies.
In fact, if you've been paying attention, you'll recall he has always denigrated and attacked allies while worshiping authoritarians.
As Minister Joly said, Canada should get its planning on. It should think broadly about what might happen and what measures it can adopt. The scope of the challenge is enormous.
If Trump does somehow manage to retake power, the whole world will slide further to the jungle of chaos and ungovernability. Canada will just feel it first and bear the brunt hardest (at least initially). The rest of the remaining free world will inevitably follow. They all know it and it desperately concerns them. The fact they are saying so outside of the cloisters of quiet diplomatic meetings is evidence of their alarm.
I saw a pickup truck the other day with right wing bumper stickers all over it. One in particular stood out: “Trump 2024 The Revenge”.
Ok, this essay really hits home, I feel queasy. Adam, do you have an account on Threads? I don’t visit Twitter any longer. Regardless, I shared this essay to Threads.
