Why were so many veterans involved in 1/6?
Want to know why so many veterans got caught up in 1/6?
America’s track record of ending war is not aligned with the success it experiences in initiating major combat operations. The imbalance between success at starting and ending war started with Korea in 1953. The US and South Korea are still at war with the North. There was no peace treaty - just a cease fire. Similarly, the loss of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan do not have a clear end point. Withdrawal does. Withdrawal from Iraq and Afghanistan were both botched by national leaders. US forces are not to blame. They acquit themselves professionally and honorably. The issue is too often they are tasked with politically impossible objectives. Military leadership does not always impress upon political leaders what is not possible. This is a critical failing that needs reflection given it runs up against the can-do creed of warfighters. It also creates confusion and deep resentment among the rank and file who, when they come home, become vulnerable to simplistic narratives that tend toward extremism. This tendency is exacerbated by the abysmal treatment veterans have faced in the US and the other western democracies. They are lied to and forgotten. It is a national disgrace. Some good people are working on improving veterans plight and some advances have been made but nothing like what our fellow citizens need.
